Conoce a: The Megas [Entrevista Exclusiva]
The Megas son una agrupación de Rock Norteamericana que combina la fantástica música encontrada dentro de los juegos de Mega Man de Capcom. Tomando inspiración directamente de la serie, escriben letras y personalidades basadas en los personajes que aparecen dentro de ella. Primordialmente trabajando en los Robot Masters.
La banda liderada por Josh Breeding ha lanzado tres álbumes completos actualmente, y en cuestión de días estará viendo la luz del día su cuarto disco.
- Get Equipped – Album basado en Mega Man 2
- Get Acoustic – Versión acústica de las canciones encontradas dentro de su primer disco.
- History Repeating: Blue – Primera parte de su álbum inspirado de Mega Man 3.
A lo largo de la corta carrera de la banda, The Megas han tocado ya en varios eventos importantes en la comunidad de los video juegos. Video Games Live! Y MAGfest por mencionar un par de ellos. Poco a poco comienzan a expandir sus giras, visitando más ciudades en Estados Unidos.
La agrupación, por distintos motivos ha ido reclutando a diferentes integrantes, con la batería viendo un par de rotaciones. Actualmente la batería está a cargo de Church, hermano de Eric quien ha estado desde el inicio.

Tuve la fortuna de entrevistar a Josh para así poder dar a conocer a The Megas al público latino. Espero disfruten leerla.
Ok, empecemos de lleno. No te quitaré demasiado tiempo y te agradezco por adelantado acceder a la entrevista, ya que deben de estar ocupados.
Alright, let’s get right down to it then. It won’t take much of your time so I thank you in advance to agreeing to it, seeing as how you guys must be busy.
Antes de comenzar ¿podrías introducir a la banda a nuestros lectores?
Before we begin the interview would you kindly introduce yourselves to our readers?
¡Claro! Soy Josh, me encargo de la guitarra, canto y ayudo con la letra. Esta Eric… el toca guitarra y canta, y tiene cabello súper rubio. También se encarga de grabar y del trabajo de sonido para la banda. Greg toca bajo y tiene grandes saltos rockeros durante los conciertos. El también se encarga de varias de las cosas que ocurren detrás de escenas que mantienen a la banda funcionando. Brian toca el teclado y sintetizador, y puede crear excelentes remixes. Church toca la batería y ayuda con lo de ingeniería de sonido.
Sure! I’m Josh I play guitar, sing, and help out with lyrics. There’s Eric…he plays Guitar and sings, and has super blonde hair. He also does the recording and sound engineering in the band. Greg plays bass and has sweet rock jumps during shows. He also handles a lot of the stuff behind the scenes that keep the band functioning. Brian plays keyboard and synth, and can shell out awesome remixes. Church plays drums and helps out with sound engineering.
¿Dónde se conocieron? ¿Cuál es la historia detrás de la banda?
Where did all of you guys meet? What’s the history behind the band?
Eric y yo nos conocimos en la Universidad y nos hicimos amigos poco tiempo después. Mientras estábamos desempleados y solteros comenzamos con un divertido proyecto donde tomábamos canciones de Mega Man 2 y las convertíamos en canciones de Rock con letras. Después, básicamente creció por su propia cuenta. Eric era amigos con Greg, quien se unió a la banda después de escuchar un par de grabaciones. Brian nos entrevistó en su podcast y se unió a la banda después de que supimos que era un monstruo del teclado. Church es hermano de Eric y toca la batería como nadie, así que lo trajimos.
Eric and I met in college and became friends sometime later. While we were both unemployed and single we started a fun project where we took songs from Megaman 2 and made them into rock songs with lyrics. Then it kinda took on a life of its own. Eric was friends with Greg, who joined the band after hearing a couple recordings. Brian interviewed us on his podcast and joined the band later when we found out he had killer keyboard skills. Church is Eric’s brother and plays drums like a beast so we scooped him up.

Sip. Yo juego de todo… demasiado, de hecho. A Eric le encantan los juegos de Blizzard. Greg juega los primeros quince minutos de todos los juegos. Brian escribe música y las implementa para juegos. Y Church es un Call of Duty bro.
Yup. I play everything…too much in fact. Eric loves Blizzard games. Greg plays the first fifteen minutes of every game. Brian writes music and implements for games. And Church is a Call of Duty bro.
¿Siempre pensaron en crear una banda inspirada en los video juegos? ¿O fue más algo que surgió en el momento y avanzo desde ahí?
Did you always thought of creating a video game inspired band? Or was it more of a spur of the moment thing and it went on from there?
Definitivamente fue algo que surgió en el momento. Teníamos amor por los Minibosses y pensamos que agregarle letras sería un giro único a la idea. Y pues todo continúo desde ese punto.
Definitely spur of the moment. We had a love for the Minibosses and just thought adding lyrics would be cool twist on the idea. It just sort of continued from that.
¿Quién o que ha sido tu más grande influencia musical? ¿Alguna banda o artista en específico?
Who or what has been your biggest musical influence? Any specific band or artist?
Difícil decirlo. Hay demasiados. Minibosses fueron los primeros que realmente empezaron a darle la popularidad a las bandas de videojuegos. El resto de nosotros tomamos inspiración de nuestras bandas favoritas y tipos de música para ayudarnos a inspirar nuestras composiciones.
Hard to say. There’s so much. Minibosses of course were the first to start the ball rolling for VG bands. The rest of us all draw from our favorite bands and types of music to help inspire our song writing.
¿Se juntan constantemente para trabajar en material nuevo? ¿Hay algún horario fijo cada semana o es espontaneo?
Do you constantly get together to work on new material? Is there a set time each week or is it spontaneous?
Siempre planeamos nuestras reuniones. Eric y yo solíamos vivir juntos así que era más fácil en aquel entonces. Ahora todos vivimos por separado y tenemos trabajos, así que tenemos que averiguar los horarios para juntarnos y componer o ensayar. Normalmente hasta después de las 8pm entre semana.
We always have to plan times to meet. Me and Eric used to live together so it was easier to get together then. Now we all live separately and have jobs so we have to figure out times to get together and shell out music or practice. Usually after 8pm on weekdays.
Mega Man siempre ha sido como un tipo de símbolo en el negocio de la música de los video juegos. Vemos a muchas personas arreglando o haciendo remixes de las distintas melodías de la serie. ¿Qué los hizo decidirse y enfocarse en esta particular franquicia?
Mega Man has always been sort of staple in the videogame music business. You see lots of people rearranging and remixing various tunes from the series. What made you decide on focusing on this particular franchise?
Los juegos de Mega Man tienen las música más pegadiza. Creo que así fue como empezó. Yo era un gran fanático y tenía una grandísima colección de juegos de Mega Man. Así que comenzamos con Mega Man 2 y cada vez que terminábamos con una canción, dábamos inicio con otra del mismo juego. En algún punto decidimos en crear el juego completo en una banda sonora, y en hacerlo para juegos de Mega Man exclusivamente.
The Megaman games have the catchiest tunes. I think that’s how it started. I was a big fan and had a huge Megaman game collection. So we started with Megaman 2 and every time we finished a song we started another from the same game. At some point we decided to just do the entire game as a soundtrack, and then decided to do Megaman games exclusively.
Los juegos de Mega Man nunca han sido ni tenido grandes historias, así que debe ser un poco complicado desarrollar estas historias y personalidades. ¿Cómo es el proceso para escribir las letras?
Mega Man games have never really been very heavy in the narrative sense so it must be quite a challenge to develop these stories and personalities. How does the lyric writing process go?
De hecho, eso lo hace mucho más fácil. Porque podemos insertarle nuestros propios puntos de vista a los personajes. Normalmente empezamos con lo básico. ¿Cómo se llama este tipo? ¿Cuál es su poder? ¿Cuál es su trabajo? ¿Cómo le afectaría a su personalidad o qué tipo de personalidad requeriría tener para estas cosas? Y después pensamos en ideas basadas en como la melodía nos hace sentir. Por ultimo esto normalmente (eso esperamos) se convierte en una canción.
Actually, that makes it a lot easier. Because we can insert our own points of view into the characters. We usually start with the basics. What’s this guy’s name, what’s his power, what’s his job and how would it affect his personality OR what kind of personality would it require to have these things? And then we come up with ideas based on how the tune makes us feel. After that it usually (hopefully) steamrolls into a song.
Han lanzado álbumes que cubren Mega Man 2 y una colaboración con Entertainment System para Mega Man 1; no olvidemos su más reciente, History Repeating Part I y Fly on a Dog, cubriendo Mega Man 3. ¿Piensan cubrir todos los títulos de la serie principal? ¿O veremos algunas sorpresas con los juegos de los que estarán tomando inspiración en un futuro?
You’ve released albums that cover Mega Man 2 and a collaboration with Entertainment System on Mega Man 1; let’s not forget your latest one History Repeating Part I and Fly on a Dog which are both Mega Man 3. Do you plan to cover every mainline title? Or will we see some surprises regarding the games you will take inspiration from in the future?
Creo que no estamos seguros todavía. Ahorita tenemos nuestras miras en terminar la saga de History Repeating con el álbum Red. Entonces ya tendríamos tiempo para enfocarnos en el siguiente paso para The Megas. Estamos muy emocionados con esta banda de Rumania con los cuales hemos estado teniendo contacto, The Belmonts. Estamos intentando convencerlos para que vuelen hacia acá para poder grabar un álbum con/para ellos.
I don’t think we’re sure yet. Right now we have our sites on finishing the History Repeating saga with the Red album. Then we’ll be free to focus on the next step for the Megas. We’re really excited about this band from Romania that we’ve been in contact with, The Belmonts. We’re trying to get them to fly out here so we can record an album for/with them.
Han tocado y hecho giras alrededor de diferentes locaciones y convenciones en los Estados Unidos. ¿Hay alguna oportunidad para poder verlos viajando a México u otro país Latinoamericano pronto?
You’ve played and toured around various locations and conventions in the US. Is there any chance we will see you traveling to Mexico or other Latin American countries soon?
Hemos estado hablando con un grupo que nos quiere llevar a la Ciudad de México, lo cual es muy emocionante. Pero todavía estamos esperando para que se convierta en algo 100%. ¡Definitivamente nos encantaría hacer algunos shows internacionales!
We’ve been talking with a group that wants to bring us out to Mexico City, which is really exciting. But we’re still waiting for that to become 100%. We’d definitely love to do some international shows!
¿Alguno de ustedes es fanático de Nintendo? ¿Hay algún juego en particular que disfruten más?
Are any of you guys Nintendo fans? Is there a particular game you enjoy the most?
Todos nosotros odiamos los video juegos… nunca hemos jugado alguno en nuestras vidas. Es broma. ¡CLARO! Nintendo es el gran abuelo para todo lo que es sagrado en nuestra comunidad. Yo crecí jugando los juegos de Mario, 8Eyes, BattleToads, y todo lo relacionado a las Ninja Turtles. Pero los juegos de Mega Man siempre han sido los mejores.
All of us hate video games….never played one in our lives. Just kidding. YEAH. Nintendo is the grandaddy to everything sacred in our community. I grew up playing the Mario games, 8eyes, Battletoads, and everything Ninja Turtle related. But the Megaman games have always been the best.
¿Hay algo que les gustaría compartir con sus fans que tal vez no conozcan sobre ustedes? ¿Alguna anécdota o algo así?
Is there something that you would like to share with the fans that maybe they don’t know about? Any stories or anything like that?
Todos The Megas somos muy buenos amigos. Creo que eso puede ser muy raro con bandas. Hemos tocado y estado juntos por mucho tiempo y todavía no me canso de estos tipos.
All the Megas are really good friends. I think that can be pretty rare with bands. We’ve played and hung out with each other for a long time and I’m still not tired of these guys.

Alright, I have to ask. Favorite Mega Man game?
Es un empate entre Mega Man 2 y Mega Man X. Pero creo que me inclino más hacia el X.
It’s a draw between Megaman 2 and Megaman X. But I think I lean more to X.

AL. FIN. ¡Se mira excelente! Creo que realmente capturaron su clásica vibra y look de NES. Nunca he sido un gran fanático de Smash Bros., pero creo que tendré que cambiar eso para este juego.
About. Friggin. TIME. He looks great! I think they really captured his classic NES vibe and look. I’ve never been a big Smash Bros fan, but I may have to get it together for this game.

¿Cómo The Megas? Solamente la serie de X. La música es increíble y la historia es fantástica. El reto son los Robot Masters… ¿cómo te identificas con personajes que se hacen llamar Chill Penguin?
As the Megas? Just the X series. The music is amazing from that game and the overall story is really great. The challenge is the Master Robots…how do you identify with a character that goes by, Chill Penguin?

Any words for all of the aspiring artists that would love having a videogame band of their own?
Háganlo. Es grandioso. Y es todavía mejor cuando lo hacen con amigos. Nuestra regla primordial siempre ha sido: ¡Mantenerlo divertido! Cuando deja de ser divertido, se convierte en trabajo.
Do it. It’s a blast. And it’s even better with friends. Our rule of thumb has always been: Keep it fun! When it stops being fun, it becomes work.
